Welcome: Vee welcomed everyone to the second meeting of the College in the High School Task Force.
Review of Minutes February 17, 2004: The minutes were reviewed. A suggestion was made that the minutes and other informational materials regarding College in the High School should be posted on the intranet with a CHS link. Vee will follow up on this.
Dual Credit Programs: Task force members reported on their follow-up discussions with faculty at other colleges with CHS programs.
Everett Community College (ECC): Rachel discussed the CHS program at Everett with a chemistry instructor.
Edmonds Community College (EdCC): A mathematics instructor at EdCC responded regarding the CHS program for mathematics.
Bellevue Community College (BCC): Rachel will continue trying to contact a science faculty member to discuss CHS programs for science. Pam suggested contacting Jim Bennett who coordinates the program for BCC.
Central Washington University: Vee shared information regarding the CHS program, Cornerstone, with the task force. This information is available on the web at: http://www.cwuce.org/cornerstone/description.asp. Cornerstone is available to any high school in Washington with a variety of CWU courses offered. The courses are taught by qualified high school instructors who are approved by CWU for adjunct professor status. The courses are offered at a reduced tuition rate of $40.00 per credit.
Advanced Placement Program: Will be discussed at next meeting.
Articulation and Transfer Group: Karin mentioned that she is a member of the statewide Articulation and Transfer Group, a sub-committee of the instructional commission. She offered to email a set of questions to members of the group regarding CHS programs across the state in community and technical colleges. Those questions will include:
Once Karin receives responses to these inquiries, she will email to Vee for summarizing. Vee will send out to the task force prior to the next meeting.
Mathematics: Jim Brady discussed the on-going Mathematics Curriculum Collaboration and Coordination project between CCS, EWU and math faculty from Spokane Public Schools. He also mentioned that the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) has a statewide transition project coordinated by Bill Moore which is studying mathematics transition from K-12 through higher education. Jim indicated that MATH 111, Pre-Calculus, might be considered as a CHS class and possibly MATH 115, Mathematics for the Liberal Arts. Jim will talk with some of his high school colleagues regarding their desire for mathematics CHS courses. There would need to be well-defined criteria including WASL scores and/or Asset testing for this to occur. Pam Praeger suggested that giving the Asset test in the high schools be considered.
General Discussion - CHS at CCS: Discussion followed regarding why Community Colleges of Spokane needs to consider having a CHS program.
If CCS developed a CHS program, examples of criteria for the program might include:
Legislative Activity: Vee distributed several documents summarizing legislative bills that were heard in the senate or house this session and focused on dual enrollment and college credit in the high school.
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be April 29, 2004, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m, in the Palouse Room at SFCC.
