CHS Dual Enrollment Programs:

Information Responses to Karin Hilgersom’s email 3/17/04:

Karin asked whether college faculty could teach a college class at the high school. This would be possible but would really not fit the criteria of CHS and would have implications for the teachers and their academic loads at the high school.

Advanced Placement Testing and Policies: Vee shared the AP (College Board) policies and action for CCS, Gonzaga University and Eastern Washington University. This information will be organized into a spreadsheet and discussed at a Vice President’s Council meeting since the AP policy and action for CCS has not been reviewed for many years by the subject area departments.

Website: A College in the High School Task Force website has been established at http://ccsi.spokane.cc.wa.us/EmployeeInfo/CHS/CHS.htm . The taskforce agreed to put the following information on the website: Chancellors Charge, Minutes after Task Force approval, SBCTC Guidelines, and Washington State CHS information. Vee will follow up and have these items placed on the website. Task Force members will be discussing the progress of the group with their constituencies at the colleges. Once the information is posted to the website, Vee will send a district wide email advising staff of the website and the task force’s activities.

Mathematics Summit – May 17, 2004, SFCC: Jim Brady announced that mathematics faculty from K-16 will be meeting on May 17 at SFCC to discuss the following:

Jim, Kelly Jahns and Penny Coffman are organizing the all day event with high school and college faculty attending by invitation only. Bill Moore, SBCTC, will be attending since there is a statewide effort by K-16 to assess mathematics curriculum and the increased need for developmental math at the college level for high school graduates. Jim mentioned that giving high school students college credit for a high school math class might motivate them to take more mathematics at college.

English Portfolio Project, SFCC: Pam Praeger reviewed a pilot program initiated by Alexis Nelson and Bryan West to offer a variant of CHS through a portfolio project. Alexis and Bryan have been working with the English teachers in Spokane Public Schools. In this project, high school students will compile a portfolio using specific criteria defined in the project. SFCC faculty will review the portfolios and assign a pass or fail. If the students receive a pass, they can request a second portfolio review for a decimal grade in English 101. This will enable them to bypass English 101 and go directly into English 201. Pam will keep the task force updated on this project.

Early College Initiative: Steve Bays clarified another CHS variant program called Early College Initiative at Medicine Wheel Academy. This program started last year and this spring, English 101 and 151 will be taught at the Academy by SFCC faculty. More classes are planned for summer 2004.

Begin to Draft Procedures for CCS College in the High School Program: Following discussion, Jim Brady will draft a mission statement and assumptions for a CCS CHS program. The task force will review this at the next meeting. Vee also will draft beginning procedure language for review by the task force.

Adjournment and Next Meeting: The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. The next meeting was scheduled for May 24, 2004, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m., SFCC, Building 1, Latah Room.
