CHS Website: The website is available and has most of the information available for CCS staff to view.
Mathematics Summit, May 17, 2004: Jim Brady and Kelly Jahns provided an overview of the Mathematics Summit held at SFCC on May 17. Representatives from high schools, SCC and SFCC, SBCTC and EWU met to discuss the need for more collaboration regarding mathematics curriculum, K-16. Minutes are available from Jim or Kelly for more information. SCC and SFCC are proposing a placement model for high school students who complete Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3 and then complete Pre Calculus with an A or B during the senior year. Students would not receive any college credit for their high school math classes but would not be required to take the Asset-Math Portion for placement into mathematics classes at SCC and SFCC. Rather, they would be placed into MATH 124 Calculus 1. The exact proposal will be developed by the math departments and implemented during 2004-2005.
At this time, there is little interest by the mathematics departments at SCC and SFCC to offer college in the high school since the AP system is in place and students can receive college credit for those courses through the exam process. There was some discussion at the Mathematics Summit to create and offer a regional exam modeled after the AP exam that would give high school students college credit for their high school math classes. Jim and Kelly will keep the CHS task force informed of their progress.
Opportunity, Education and Washington’s Economic Future: Vee shared a handout from the SBCTC dated May 7, 2004. Earl Hale, SBCTC, referred to this document at the CCS Environmental Scan as part of the strategic planning process. Reference was made to Issue V. Two-Year College Relationships with the K-12 System.
Policy Implications:
This document will be added to the website.
CCS College in the High School Procedures: At the last meeting, Jim Brady offered to draft an initial mission statement for College in the High School at CCS. He submitted the following for our review today:
At the direction of Dr. Livingston, a task force has been formed to "…study and propose, if appropriate, a College in the High School Program (CHS) that complies at a minimum with the State Board for Community and Technical College guidelines for CHS." Those guidelines have been established to ensure that both the level of expectations in the curriculum and the qualifications of the instructors meet the same standards as courses taught on campus.
The task force is working under the assumption that there is coursework common to high school and college curricula and if there are college-level courses being taught at high schools by faculty who meet our qualifications as adjunct, we should consider setting up criteria for granting college credit. With the recent changes in high school curricula and standards brought about by WASL, we should investigate opportunities to encourage high school students to pursue college level preparations while still in high school and encourage positive connections between secondary and post-secondary institutions.
Vee provided a beginning draft document of procedures for CHS College in the High School.
Discussion followed regarding both of these documents. It was recommended that Vee begin drafting initial procedures and mission statement over the summer for review in fall, 2004, by the task force.
All-Administrators Meeting: Dr. Livingston has requested a progress report from the task force at the All-Administrators meeting on June 4, 2004. Vee and other members of the task force attending will be doing that.
Next Meeting: The next meeting of the task force will be held in fall, 2004.
